It's Hard Out Here for a BS Fan

I’m sitting here in Josh’s room helping him pack for college. Well, I’m not helping. I’m writing this. Anyways, we’re blasting the Britney (like always) and Josh commented that it was too bad that he won’t be able to do this in college anymore.

“What? Pack your clothes?” I questioned.

“No you stupid bitch! Pump Britney!” He screamed.

“Why????” I innocently asked.

“BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL THINK I’M A FREAK YOU RETARDED MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!!”  He shouted as he choked me to death.

Okay, well, that’s a bit of a dramatization of the scene, but that’s the basic rundown. And then we discovered a strange fact.

There is nothing more mainstream in music or just popular culure in general than Britney Jean Spears. Yet if someone walked into your dorm room while you were  blasting “…Baby One More Time”, they would really think that you were a freak. Yet, if you were playing some alternative band that no ones heard of, you’re automatically hip. It’s confusing.

For the most part, we go the more …I don’t want to say “indie”, but I can’t think of another word…”not mainstream”, I guess,  route when it comes to other aspects of pop culture, and I guess that that’s what makes our obsessively genuine love for Britney even more disarming. I think a lot of people think that we’re being ironic when we talk about Brit so much, but as loyal readers will know, we’re for real.

And that’s why it’s so subversive for us to like Brit. A couple of weird teenagers that tend to hate everything else mainstream. Are we just buying into the marketing of Britney, or are we SO alternative that we like something totally mainstream making it alternative again?

I don’t know. It’s a mystery. All I know is that I already have my Brit pics all ready to collage over my bed. Judge me all you want, bitches, but I know in my heart the goodness that is Britney Spears.

Disney Channel is a prison.

So remember when you were watching the Teen Choice Awards 2009 and Miley Cyrus gave America a nice little pole dance?

Or when you heard the news this week that Demi Lovato is slitting her wrists? Again?

Or maybe even when you found out that Mitchel Musso is a smoker?

Well is it just me or do these Disney channel stars have it bad? And it’s not just those three.

If ANY Disney channel star out there does something that’s “different” or something that a “role model wouldn’t do”, they’re dug in a deep shit hole that’s hard to come out of.

Because that shit gets piled up on with more shit, and pretty soon that star will find themselves swimming in a sea – a sea of what? A sea of shit.

I mean, sure. On their part – they shouldn’t be doing anything that’s too outragous. I mean fuck, you’re the one that signed up to be a pretty little princess on Disney channel. And here are the rules of being a princess:

  1. Princesses don’t smoke.
  2. Princesses don’t cut.
  3. Princesses don’t date underwear models.
  4. Princesses aren’t depressed/emo.
  5. Princesses don’t pole dance.
  6. Princesses don’t break up with other princesses over a 27-second phone call.
  7. And princesses don’t make bands called ‘The Princess and The Scene’ to poke fun at people calling them a wanna-be scene princess.

On the other hand, people are extremely critical.

HELLO, MILEY CYRUS IS A HUMAN BEING TOO.

Believe it or not. I mean, I know it’s hard to believe.

But we all have that inner-good inside of us somewhere so please, believe it, even if it is for a few seconds.

Sure I was shocked when she suddenly started attacking a stripper pole during her performance. But her parents were right there, watching. With very calm expressions on their face as if to say, “There is nothing wrong with my daughter grinding on a pole in front of young kids during her performance. Please remain seated and calm. “

It WAS just part of the performance. Plus, she didn’t even “grind” on it that much. I mean – she wasn’t popping her booty. (Thank god thank god thank god.)

Then there’s miss Damsel in Distress Demi. Depressed Demi. Destroyed Demi. Dillegent (when it comes to cutting her wrists) Demi.

But, come on guys. Are you telling me that EXTREMELY HUGE FUCKING SMILE ON HER FACE is always being faked?

That’s not even possible. She’s too bad of an actress. (Ouch.)

Anyways, okay – apparently she cuts her wrists. Of course that’s unhealthy and I for one am completely against self harm. But, if Britney Spears started doing it, then nobody would be so shocked. I mean she already shaved her head bald.

I think Demi’s just going through a phase and obviously, should be given help, but shouldn’t be attacked by the media on it.

Or she can be smarter and put cover-up on her wrists. Dumbo Demi.

And Mitchel Musso. Who I guess, nobody really cares about but, is there anyways? He’s like the adopted kid with the freaky hair that nobody wants.

But nonetheless he is still a Disney star and was caught smoking. What a rebel, huh?!

No not really. Who the hell doesn’t smoke in Hollywood? Or at least, everyone’s done it ONCE.

So give him a break, too. It’s not the end of the world. Maybe he just needs a way to get his mind off the fact that Emily Osment doesn’t want him.

Basically, being a Disney channel star HAS to be hell.

I mean, look at the Jonas Brothers.

Lady GaGa admitted she’d “like to have a foursome with them.”

Pretty freaky.

Britney's Circus Comes to Madison Square Garden

Last night, I attended my second show of Britney Spears’s amazing tour, The Circus Starring: Britney Spears, which she so kindly brought to New York City for three nights at Madison Square Garden. My first show was back in April when she visited the San Francisco Bay Area, but, after reading about the several tweaks she has made to the show since then, I was still very excited to see her perform again.

Instead of the Pussycat Dolls, Britney welcomed a new batch of performers to open the show. Kristinia DeBarge, One Call, and Jordin Sparks each performed a set before Ms. Spears took the three-ringed stage. I’ve heard Kristinia DeBarge on the radio (how could anyone escape that “Goodbye” song?), and I am a fan of Jordin Sparks, but I was unfamiliar with the group One Call.

I went to the show by myself (only buying one ticket in my frantic race to get a decent seat during pre-sales) so I was a little nervous about being there alone. At the show in Oakland, I went with my friend Kate and her sister so I didn’t feel weird standing up and dancing during the show. I prayed that whoever sat next to me was also a huge Britney fan, ready to sing and dance along. Unfortunately, I sat next to a guy who was probably dragged there by his girlfriend/fiance/wife. Awkward! Once the show started though (and they saw how into it I was) they were actually very chill. The guy even told a rude man blocking our view to move!

The show? It. Was. Amazing. It was easily a thousand times better than when I saw her in Oakland. Britney owned the entire stage, dancing with an energy that fans haven’t seen from her in a long time. Although she’s not back to Onyx-Hotel-Tour Britney, she was pretty damn close. There was a smile on her face from beginning to end. The changes to the show were fantastic, not only adding an excitement to the tour Britney has been doing for almost five months now, but also improving upon some things that could have been better the first time around. For the second night in a row, Britney wore a new and improved, anti-my-pussy-is-hangin’-out gold-plated corset top as she descended to the stage. Her other costume changes were very flattering (although I do miss the original red ringleader jacket), complimenting her already-toned body to the fullest. The remixes of some of the songs (new since the last time I saw her) were great. Also, screens above the stage that showed Britney as she performed were put back, which I’m sure those seated up high appreciated.

Favorite number? Definitely “Get Naked (I Got a Plan)”. Before last night, “Get Naked” was just another Britney song to me. After her amazing performance last night, it has quickly become one of my favorites.

The crowd? I was not expecting a crowd from New York to be so lethargic! I seemed to be the only one in my section standing up, dancing, and singing along. If there was anything that was disappointing about last night, it would be the lack of energy the crowd gave Britney, despite the massive amount she was giving them. Not to say there weren’t thousands of screaming fans, I was just expecting more. Oh well. Maybe the true fans went to the Monday show.

I’m so happy that I was able to see the show last night. It was like Britney Spears welcomed me to New York!

What else? The college/dorm shopping this week so far has been a little frantic. It seems so hard to remember the things I need daily at home that I also need when I’m away at school. I hope it all works out! I ordered new glasses and bought a pair of jeans this afternoon. All I need are shoes, and I’m good to go. Sort of. I still need that mini fridge, too. My roommate moved into our room already, I think. Anxious to move in and meet him this Sunday!

Jordin Sparks

Cara Carriveau, NBC Chicago Street Team

My jaw hit the floor when I heard that Jordin Sparks was touring with Britney Spears on the second leg of her “Circus” tour (coming to the Allstate Arena September 9).  C’mon…Jordan is a sweet innocent 19 year old that proudly wears a purity ring and just spent the summer on the road with super-sweet-goodie-guys The Jonas Brothers (also known for their purity rings)…if I was Jordin’s mother I’d be very nervous knowing she’ll be on the same bill at Britney.  They’ll be spending a lot of time together on the road.  Do I really need to list the reasons why it’s worrisome?  OMG.  Heck, maybe Jordin’s behavior (ie, morals) will rub off on Britney…wouldn’t that be special!

I just spoke to Jordin Sparks for WTMX and she is thrilled about all of the things going on in her career.  She’ll be part of “VH1 Diva’s” airing live on September 17 hosted by Paula Abdul, and Jordin is very blatant about her opinion regarding Paula no longer being a judge on American Idol.  Listen here:

Catch Jordin Sparks at “Skate From The Heart” September 19 at the Sears Centre Arena.
